Generating a Postscript File

Sending a Postscript file for your print job generally eliminates a lot of problems like missing fonts, missing links, unsupported application or unsupported platform. You can send us Postscript files for your black & white jobs, colour jobs, printed on the press or digitally. You might need to download a PPD first.

Generating a PostScript File Using AdobePS 8.5.1 or Later

To create a PostScript file from QuarkXpress using AdobePS 8.5.1 or later:

  1. Download and install AdobePS 8.5.1 or later from Adobe's Web site.
  2. Select AdobePS in the Chooser.
  3. Open the document in QuarkXpress.
  4. Choose File > Page Setup.
  5. Select the appropriate paper size, orientation, and scaling.
  6. Choose QuarkXpress from the Page Setup pop-up menu.
  7. Specify the following:
    a. Printer Type
    b. Resolution: 600 dpi (or other appropriate value for intended output)
    c. Data Format: Binary
    d. Paper Width: the width of the paper size you selected in step 5
  8. Choose Postscript Options from the Page Setup pop-up menu.
  9. Deselect all of the Visual Effects and Image & Text options.
  10. Click OK to close the Page Setup dialog box.
  11. Choose File > Print.
  12. Choose Destination: File.
  13. In the Print dialog box, choose General from the printer options menu.
  14. Specify 1 for Copies and specify the page range as appropriate.
  15. Choose QuarkXpress from the printer options pop-up menu.
  16. Select the appropriate output options (e.g., separations or registration) for the document.
  17. Choose PostScript Settings (AdobePS 8.6 or later) or Save As File
    (AdobePS 8.5.1) from the printer options pop-up menu.
  18. Choose Postscript Job from the Format pop-up menu, select Level 1, 2 and
    3 Compatible
    for the PostScript Level, select Binary for the Data Format,
    and choose All from the Font Inclusion pop-up menu.
  19. Click Save.
  20. Specify a name and location for the file.

QuarkXpress Mac

Generating a PostScript File Using LaserWriter 8.4 or Later

To create a PostScript file from QuarkXpress using the LaserWriter 8.4 or later:

  1. Open the document in QuarkXpress and choose File > Page Setup.
  2. From the Page Setup pop-up menu, choose the appropriate printer.
  3. Choose a page size from the Paper pop-up menu and specify Portrait or Landscape for the Orientation option.
  4. Choose QuarkXpress from the Printer options pop-up menu.
  5. Choose the appropriate printer PPD from the Printer Type pop-up menu.
  6. Enter the document width in the Paper Width text box.
  7. Choose PostScript Options from the QuarkXpress pop-up menu, and deselect all the Visual Effects and Image and Text options.
  8. Click OK to close the Page Setup dialog box.
  9. Choose File > Print.
  10. Choose File from the Destination pop-up menu.
  11. Choose Save As File from the Print options pop-up menu.
  12. Choose PostScript Job from the Format pop-up menu.
  13. Select Level 1 Compatible for the PostScript Level option.
  14. Select either ASCII or Binary for the Data Format option.
  15. Choose All from the Font Inclusion pop-up menu to ensure that all font information is included in the PostScript file.
  16. Click Save, and then specify a name and location for the PostScript file.
  17. Click Save to generate the PostScript file.

PageMaker MAC/PC

To create a PostScript file from PageMaker:

  1. Open your publication in PageMaker.
  2. Choose File > Print.
  3. Choose a PostScript printer from the Print To pop-up menu.
  4. Click Paper. Choose a paper size (e.g., Letter or Legal).
  5. Click Options to open the Print Options dialog box.
  6. Select Normal, download all PostScript and TrueType fonts and Write PostScript To File in the PostScript section. You can specify a new location and name by clicking Save As (Mac OS) or Browse (Windows). In Mac OS, you should also click Save As and specify a location to save the PostScript file. Select Page Independence as well.
  7. Click Save to generate the PostScript file.

AutoCAD PC

To create a PostScript file from AutoCAD:

  1. Open your publication in AutoCAD.
  2. Choose File > Plot.
  3. In the Plot Device tab, choose a PostScript plotter from the Plotter Configuration section. (To add a PostScript plotter so that it appears as an option in the Plot dialog box, you must use the Add Plotter wizard. More details can be found here.)
  4. Enter a file name and then set the location of the file in the Plot to file section.
  5. Next, click on the Plot Settings tab to set Paper Size, Orientation and Scale.
  6. You may preview the plot before clicking OK to write the PostScript file.

Most Microsoft Windows applications

To create a PostScript file from most Windows applications:

  1. Download and install the printer driver for the device you will be printing to.
  2. Configure your printer driver to print to a PostScript printer on FILE. (You should have the target printer selected during the design of document. If you change the printer after design, check carefully for text reflow before creating your PostScript print-ready file.)
  3. Open your document and choose File > Print.
  4. In the Print dialog box, click Setup.
  5. Choose PostScript Printer on FILE from the Specific Printer pop-up menu.
  6. Click on Properties and enter the document's width in the Paper Width text box.
  7. Click OK to close the Printer Setup dialog box and return to the Print dialog box.
  8. Select your desired printer options, and then click OK.
  9. Enter the name and destination for your PostScript file in the Print to File dialog box. Add a ".ps" extension to the filename to distinguish it as a PostScript file.
  10. Click OK to generate the PostScript file.
