Installing the Docutech135 Printer Driver for Windows
2000

Installing a new printer for Windows for the first time can be pretty
daunting. This section explains how to install the printer driver after
you've downloaded
the driver from Xerox's website. Once you have installed the printer driver,
you'll be able to save your document as a Postscript
file for printing on the Docutech.

You may want to print out this guide for reference.
-
Download
the printer driver installation file from Xerox's website. Click here
if you need help downloading.
-
Once you have downloaded the PPD (Postscript Printer Description)
file, we need to install it. From Windows Start
menu, choose Settings and then Printers.

click on any screenshot to enlarge
-
The Printers folder will open and display
the printers currently installed on our computer along with the Add
Printer icon. Double-click on the Add
Printer icon to start the Add Printer
Wizard. Click Next > to continue.

-
Select Local Printer but do not select
the auto detect option. Click Next >
to continue. Next, scroll down the list of printer ports and select
File: Print to File. (Don't worry if
another printer is listed as already using this port. You can have
several printers set up to print to file on your computer.)

-
When asked to select the manufacturer and model of your printer,
choose Have Disk. The Install
From Disk dialogue box will open. Browse
to locate the PPD and INF files you downloaded from Xerox and click
OK.

-
Select the Xerox Docutech 135 printer.
If there are PCL and PS versions of the PPD, make sure that you've
selected the PS version. You can either keep the default printer name
shown or change it as you wish. (You will probably not want to make
the DT135 your default printer but you should have it selected during
the design of documents intended for output on the DT135. If you change
to the DocuTech printer after design, check carefully on screen for
changes in line breaks, page breaks and text reflow before creating
your PostScript print-ready file.)

-
Printer Sharing: Select Do not share this
printer. Print Test Page: Select No.
When you click Next > this time,
the actual driver installation will proceed.

-
That completes this part of the installation. Click Finish.

-
You might get a Digital Signature Not Found
message. Click Yes to proceed.

-
Now that the printer is installed, we
need to configure some of its default properties. Click on Start,
Settings, Printers to show a list of all installed printers.
Right-click on the Docutech135 printer and select Properties.

-
Click on the Device Settings tab and open the Font Substitution
Table by clicking one on the + sign.
By default, the print driver is set to substitute roughly equivalent
printer fonts for the TrueType ones that come with Windows. In order
to make sure that your document looks exactly as you designed it,
you do not want to allow this substitution. To prevent it, scroll
through the list of fonts, and wherever there is a font name listed
on the right, select it and change it to <Don't
Substitute>. Don't forget Symbol and Times New Roman.

-
Next, click on the General tab. Click
on Printing Preferences. In the next
window, click on Advanced.

-
Under Graphic, change TrueType
Font: Substitute with Device Font to Download
as Softfont in order to prohibit font substitution within your
graphics as well as in the body text of your document. Next, under
Document Options, click on the +
sign to the left of PostScript Options
to show that listing. Change the PostScript
Output Option from its default setting of Optimize for Speed
to Optimize for Portability and change
the TrueType Font Download Option from
its default setting of Automatic to Native
TrueType. Click OK.

- You are now ready to print to a Postscript
file from your Windows applications.
